OUR STORY

In 1919, a young couple sent a circular to the Jewish community in Durban, asking for their support. Faced with growing antisemitism and barred from many of the city’s clubs, they had decided to set up their own – a space for the community to come together, socialise and host events.

So began the Durban Jewish Club. Initially a small literary and musical club, it grew into one of Durban’s liveliest venues. As well as offering entertainment, the Jewish Club was committed to improving the lives of those in the community and beyond, undertaking numerous social projects. During the Second World War, it became a canteen for soldiers coming off the ships. In the post-war years, it remained a hub, with sports teams, musical events and regular visits from leading speakers.

Today, the Circle Cafe stands on the same campus of the former club, recalling its unique history and legacy by offering a warm and tranquil space for people from all walks of life to come together and relax.

OUR TEAM

CAROL – HEAD OF CATERING

The energetic Carol is always on the go, sourcing the finest kosher ingredients, checking stock, and coordinating with Durban’s leading hotels as well as private individuals. “I love my job,” she beams. “I adore the people, the Yiddisher atmosphere, and being able to provide an important service.”

Contact Carol if you would like to make a booking or if you need world class kosher meals in Durban.

JUDY – CHIEF BALEBOSTE

Menu planning, teaching staff and testing new ideas take up most of Judy’s day. With 40 years’ experience in the food and hospitality, Judy is our own kosher Nigella-leh. “I feel privileged to work in such a wonderful environment, and to know that, ultimately, it is all for a good cause.”

MICHELEGIFT SHOP MANAGERESS

Friendly, smiley Michele spends her day merchandising, window dressing, and helping customers pick out the perfect gift or décor item. “I have a passion for beautiful things,” she professes, “and I feel so honoured that the proceeds of everything I sell go back to the DHGC for education.” She’s also an ad hoc gift wrapper, waitress and babysitter.

Contact Michele if you’re looking for a gift for a loved one or a special something for your home. If you’d like to see a particular product stocked in the gift shop, or you have your own range the gift shop might feature.

SAM & LEEFRONT OF HOUSE

With many years in the service industry between them, these lovely ladies are well skilled to maintain the gleaming, ordered, tranquil atmosphere you know and love. “The Circle is such a nice environment to work in – everyone is always happy,” remarks Lihle. “It’s wonderful getting to know different types of people.” Their talents include serving customers, smiling and making fabulous cappuccinos.

SMANGELE MLAMBO, SINDISIWE NGCOBO, NOMPUMELELO TSHAPA – KITCHEN CREW

Under Judy’s guiding arm, these committed ladies produce dish after fabulous kosher dish for the café’s delighted customers. “We’re proud to be part of the Circle,” notes Bridgette. “We know that we are making really good food, and that we’re also supporting the DHGC and helping to create a better society for the future.” And for fun? They bake!

GARY MASHGIACH

Gary brings with him high standards and even higher spirits. He’s the one responsible for ensuring that things are ship shape in the Circle Café kitchen and that all food is of a high quality and Kosher standard.

Contact Gary if you have any Kashrut queries.
